Ensures a clean safe workplace which is stocked with necessary supplies.
1.1 Conduct walk-through of assigned rooms and restock emergency rooms with needed supplies each day at the beginning of the shift.
1.2 Empty trash and linen containers at beginning and end of shift.
1.3 Stocks linen daily and returns cart to Holding.
1.4 Terminate rooms after each patient use: Clean carrier, change sheets, restock supplies, dispose of used linen, trash, and ensure trays and/or instruments or other equipment are taken care of according to the current procedure.
1.5 Instruments are bagged immediately and taken to SPD.
Maintain equipment, instruments and trays in good working order.
2.1 Report and label all faulty equipment and return to appropriate department. Ensure replacement equipment is obtained.
2.2 Advise charge nurse of potential for improvement.
2.3 Ensure that oxygen tanks are full and in proper location each shift.
2.4 Gather ED equipment throughout the hospital and return to ED as needed.
2.5 Maintain the equipment and supply area and the soiled holding area in neat order daily.
Patient care skills - assists with basic, age-appropriate nursing care to patients under the direct supervision of the RN and assists the nursing staff in the routine care of the emergency patient according to standard policy and procedure.
3.1 Delivers physical care, comfort measure and elimination needs to assigned patients in a safe and efficient manner.
3.2 Demonstrates competence in performing technical procedures for which he/she has demonstrated competency.
3.3 Provides emotional support and considers patient and family needs.
3.4 Organizes and prioritizes workload to complete assignments during shift.
3.5 Assists the primary nurse in providing care to the patient.
3.6 Vital signs are recorded immediately on the chart, the patient is prepared for exam and report is given to the primary nurse.
3.7 Assists the physician in patient examination and treatment.
3.8 Performs 12 lead EKG on the patient as soon as possible and documents completion on the computer.
3.9 Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate lead placement for routine cardiac monitoring and 12 lead EKG.
3.10 Demonstrates skills in trouble shooting problems with equipment.
3.11 Assists in safe and efficient transportation of the ED patient to/from private auto and to/from hospital room or other department.
3.12 Provide a safe environment for the patient who requires observation and/or restraint.
3.13 Assists the nurse with the admission and discharge process as follows: 1) Places patient on monitor, BP cuff, SpO2 monitor as indicated by nurse; 2) Assists patient in completion of HHQ if needed; 3) Helps orient patient and family to room and call light, and places call light within reach of patient; and d) Helps prepare patient for discharge by assisting with last minute procedures such as splinting, dressing wounds, etc., taking final vital signs and recording, gathering patient belongings and assisting patient to auto if needed.
Performs patient procedures.
4.1 Apply splints and/or assist nurse or physician with splint application.
4.2 Assist physician with suturing.
4.3 Wound irrigation maintaining aseptic or sterile technique.
4.4 Phlebotomy skills - obtains and maintains integrity of specimens in accordance with MHC policies and procedures and physician orders: (1) maintains rigid accuracy in identification of all patients; (2) demonstrates knowledge of specimen labeling procedures and applies knowledge by correctly and accurately labeling all specimens; (3) demonstrates ability to correctly perform venipuncture and capillary drawing techniques as assessed by supervisor and maintain a minimum repeat draw and unsuccessful draw rate; (4) demonstrates an understanding of specimen suitability for testing by awareness of proper anticoagulation and special handling techniques as designated in the laboratory procedure manual; (5) notifies supervisor in a timely manner of all problems with phlebotomy duties; (6) demonstrates ability to read and review physician orders so that tests are not missed and samples do not have to be redrawn; (7) demonstrates ability to prioritize tasks with particular emphasis on response to STATS, ASAPs, timed draws, etc., an arranges for timely delivery of specimens to the laboratory; and (8) skills list to include but not limited to: venipuncture technique, capillary puncture technique, timed draws, blood culture collection, blood banking procedures, and ABG's after certification.
4.5 Respiratory therapy - provides selected respiratory care to patients of all ages following accepted respiratory care practices, MHC policies and procedures and physician orders: (1) demonstrates basic understanding of respiratory anatomy and physiology; and (2) Properly applies oxygen device, nasal canula, mask, etc.
4.6 Recognizes changes in patient status and reports appropriate information to the RN in a timely manner.
4.7 Inserts foley catheters using sterile technique.
4.8 Obtains urine specimens (via CCUA, feminine catheter, foley catheter, etc) and stool specimens for culture in compliance with hospital policy and procedure.
4.9 Performs and documents blood pressure and heart rate recordings in lying, sitting and standing positions (tilt) in a safe manner and notifies RN of patient response in a timely manner.
4.10 Applies simple dressings using proper aseptic technique.
4.11 FOR LICENSED INTERMEDIATE EMT OR PARAMEDIC EMT STAFF: Initiates IV's at the primary nurse's discretion and is done in compliance with MHC policy and procedure.
Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication.
5.1 Greets visitors, screens individuals and coordinates activity of ancillary departments interfacing with the ER.
5.2 Communicates with patient, family, visitors and employees respectfully; communicates pertinent information to charge nurse and/or staff nurse.
5.3 Promptly reports all signs and symptoms indicating changes in the patient condition to appropriate nurse immediately.
5.4 Rounds on patients in department to assist with keeping them informed.
Interpersonal skills/teamwork and productivity - Demonstrates a positive attitude and willingness to facilitate unit functioning and is a productive member of the patient care unit team.
6.1 Demonstrates a willingness to assist when asked.
6.2 Demonstrates flexibility in responding to patient/unit needs.
6.3 Demonstrates a respectful manner toward patients.
6.4 Shows independence by completing duties with appropriate supervision.
6.5 Utilizes time in an efficient manner, completing duties in a timely fashion.
6.6 Shows initiative in seeking out appropriate additional duties.
6.7 Respects and maintains patient confidentiality.
6.8 Answers the patient call lights in a timely manner to determine needs and responds appropriately by fulfilling needs within the scope of job description or reports to the nurse.
Participates in department functions and performs other duties as assigned by charge nurse. Safety - maintains a safe environment for patients and coworkers.
7.1 Recognizes unsafe conditions and takes action or reports conditions to supervisor immediately.
7.2 Adheres to universal precautions and principles of asepsis.
7.3 Demonstrates awareness of and concern for patient safety.
7.4 Assists patients in transfer using proper body mechanics and transfer techniques.
7.5 Complies with hospital and department policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
7.6 Attends 75% of staff meetings and reads minutes to all others.
7.7 Maintains current BLS-C training.
7.8 Maintains strict confidentiality.

Education: High school diploma or GED.
Experience: Patient care experience required.
Certifications: AUA certification,EMT-Btraining,and BLS-C required. Nursing Student. Required certifications must be current before assigned to care for patients independently.
Other: Must have good oral communication skills both in person and over the phone to greet people and take messages and make arrangements. Must be able to type and operate a computer.
